I began my foray with ice in the winter of '04/'05. The idea was to take my skills with rock, and apply them to a medium which is inherently changing. With rock, what you find is what you have to work with. When using ice, issues with melting and freezing develop. For the three towers created below, the ice was stable enough to support my weight, but when I returned in the morning, all three sculptures had plunged through the ice. While balancing must still be performed, one has the aid of temporarily melting the ice, then allowing it to freeze enough to be stable. This effect is illustrated by the (') found atop one of the sculptures.
