'69 Bulkhead Refurbishment

Day 6

What a mess. The hole appears to have been made with a combination of a torch, tin snips, pliers, and a hammer.

Here's the repair:

I began by drilling out all of the spot welds and busting them free with an old chissel.

There is a small tack weld in the top corner of each side that must be ground away.

The other side.

From below.

The piece removed. The panel actually is an inch taller, but is covered by other panels. To remove the panel entirely would have been a great deal more work, so a cut was made that nobody will ever see once the new panel is installed.

A little overview.

Here is a good close up of what's left after the panel has been removed. The inch that was left behind isn't visible but for where the two hemispherical holes exist.

From the engine bay side of things.

Yeah, it's my forestry helmet, but it's the only good hearing protection I have.

The clean-cut line is visible as well as a side view of the region.

Bottom right corner. The holes and depressions are from drilling out the spot welds.

Another view. I don't have any real dollys, but I make do with other tools and some random Simpson Strong-Tie items.

All cleaned up and ready for the patch.
